Ares Partners + Atelier Liu Yuyang, Yun House hotel in Xin Ping

In Xin Ping, in China’s southern region of Guangxi, stands this hotel immersed in the mountains forming the landscape of the Li River. The project has two parts: on the one hand, the transformation of a group of ruined farmhouses into an eco-resort, a work of Ares Partners; on the other hand, the construction of a new building to house a restaurant, designed by Atelier Liu Yuyang. Both Shanghai-based practices aim to blend the complex into the original structure of the village it is inserted into. Respect for preexisting structures is of the essence, and the old buildings are adapted to accommodate contemporary life. The restaurant is discreetly integrated into the complex through steel frames that strike a contrast with the blocks of local stone. The spatial dialogue between old and new is explicit in the new houses, each of which contains four rooms and a central shared area. This design principle is applied in the interiors of the hotel and restaurant, which provide harmony and contrast at the same time.
