07/04/2016

Rafael Moneo has been named the winner, for the year 2015, of Spain’s National Award for Architecture, an honor given by the Ministry of Public Works. Coming with an endowment of 60,000 euros, it acknowledges individuals or entities that have in an extraordinary way contributed to enriching architecture and urban planning within and beyond our borders. For the architect born in Tudela, Navarre, in 1937, this is the latest of a long list of distinctions received, among them the Pritzker in 1996, the Mies van der Rohe in 2001, the RIBA Gold Medal in 2003, and the Prince of Asturias for the Arts in 2012.

Presented for this year’s award are sixteen recommended candidates, for a total of twenty-four organizations and institutions related to architecture, urban planning, and the fine arts. Rafael Moneo’s candidacy has been put forward by Luis Fernández-Galiano, chair of Projects at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (ETSAM) and director of the magazines AV/Arquitectura Viva.
