SOM completes a new building for the U.S. Air Force Academy
The Center for Character and Leadership Development (CCLD) will function as an education and research center, and is a symbolic addition to the Academy’s campus outside Colorado Springs, designed by SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) in 1954. Serving a counterpoint to the Academy’s iconic Cadet Chapel, the CCLD - with an area of 4,273 meters – features a dramatic skylight that aligns with the North Star. This glass-enclosed structure, which rises 32 meters high, consists of diagonal steel plates composed in a triangular grid.
