Pablo Gallego Picard, River Beach in Goián (Pontevedra)

In order to restore the river beach of Goián while reactivating the environment of the fortress of San Lorenzo, the project focussed on the only spot legally authorized for the purpose: a hillside of steep slopes facing south, toward the mouth of the Miño River and towards Portugal. It involves a single constructive stroke that forms a continuous retaining wall. This linear element, which stretches through both parts of the operation, serves alternatively as a bench, a parapet, a beam, a grandstand, a step, and a boundary, its useful height varying to adapt to each of the uses. In addition, the solution adopted takes advantage of features of the topography to incorporate facilities, through a series of platforms that also work to provide views and shade by becoming large observation points and cantilevers. Hence, the beach and the fortress – already separated before the project, and used at different times of the day – have been fused to become one single place. In front, spectacular views do the rest.
