In a central area of Perth, amid different cultural institutions and protected historical edifices, rises the new building of the Western Australian Museum. The commission to design it was given to the team composed of OMA – the Dutch office headed by Rem Koolhaas – and the local firm Hassel. A stacking of glass boxes forms a cantilever over the existing volumes. The new museum will be almost four times the size of the old facilities, and will include a large public square. The 7,000 square meters of exhibition galleries will unfold in two intersecting visitor routes, one horizontal and the other vertical. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2017 and finish in 2020.
