The Brazilian Paulo Mendes da Rocha has been distinguished with the 2017 Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), shortly after winning – for this year 2016 – the Praemium Imperiale of Japan and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievment at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale. Annually since 1948 the RIBA has bestowed the distinction on individuals whose career has been a significant contribution to the advancement of architecture. Laureates of recent years include Zaha Hadid (2016), Peter Zumthor (2013), David Chipperfield (2011), and I. M. Pei (2010).
