Zooco Estudio, performing arts center in Verín (Orense)

On the banks of the river Támega lies the Galician municipality of Verín, on the outskirts of which stands the educational-cultural facility designed by Zooco Estudio, a practice working from offices in Madrid and Santander, headed by Miguel Crespo Picot, Javier Guzmán Benito, and Sixto Martín Martínez. On a trapezoidal lot that slopes a bit, the building is broken up into six granite cubes, each independently housing a particular function: main auditorium, music classrooms, multipurpose hall, entrance, cafeteria, and administration. Making up a small village, these pavilions vary in height and shift and rotate in a seemingly random scheme governed by flexibility criteria and the necessary contacts between the different uses. They are connected by a large slab that forms covered passageways beneath it as well as access to the cubes themselves, creating irregular spaces resembling cells.
