‘Moontopia’ competition winners

Organized by the magazine Eleven, the competition sought to bring in designs for the the construction of self-sufficient lunar colonies for living, working, research, and space tourism. The jury, which included NASA designers, selected nine projects out of hundreds submitted. First prize went to ‘Test Lab,’ by Monika Lipinska, Laura Nadine Olivier, and Inci Lize Ogun, which proposes gradual colonization of the moon through origami-inspired 3D printing of fiber structures of carbon to be assembled by astronauts themselves. The winner of the second prize is ‘Momentum Virium L1,’ by Sergio Bianchi, Jonghak Kim, Simone Fracasso, and Alejandro Jorge Velazco Ramírez. The people’s choice award has gone to ‘Modulpia,’ by Alessandro Giorgi, Cai Feng, Siyuan Pan, and Esteban Analuiza. Finally, there are six honorable mentions: ‘Platinum City’, by Sean Thomas Allen; ‘Upside Down,’ by Ryan Tung Wai Yin, Ho Wing Tsit Teresina, and Joshua Ho; ‘Looking through the Moon Eye,’ by Yiling Chu, Yao Ding, Yan-Fei Jiang, and Hui Tian; ‘Womb,’ by Prapatsorn Sukkaset and Saran Chamroonkul; ‘The Aerosphere,’ by Stephanie Stiers, and ‘Lunar Oasis,’ by Edward Chew.
