Bridge House, Mercadal

Nomo Studio

A work of Nomo Studio, the Barcelona firm of Alicia Casals and Karl Nyqvist, this private residence is located on the north coast of the island of Menorca, in the Coves Noves development of the municipality of Mercadal.

Containing a total of 360 square meters, the house breaks up into small polyhedral blocks, joining square and pentagonal floor plans to form the bridge that gives it its name. The volumes are angled to obtain the best views while protecting the family’s privacy. The facades and sloped roofs are white-washed, in accordance with Menorcan tradition. Continuous bands of sliding shutters made of perforated aluminum, which are also white, cover the main facade, while the rear, with no openings, presents a very rough stucco that strikes a contrast with the fine finish of the rest of the surfaces.

Emphasized by indirect lighting through hidden strips of LEDs, the height of the ceilings – reaching 4 meters – facilitates natural cooling. The heart of the house is a large, almost 100-square-meter terrace under the ‘floating’ blocks.
