Tainan Spring, Tainan City

MVRDV

The Rotterdam firm MVRDV has turned a shopping mall built in the 1980s into a public space with a swimming pool in Tainan, a city in the south of the island of Taiwan. Tainan Spring, as the faciity is called, is part of a larger plan to regenerate the area. The bathing zone is embedded into the underground parking garage of the commercial center. The water level will rise and and fall in response to the wet and dry seasons, and mist sprayers will keep temperatures down during hot weather. The complex is surrounded by young plants which in two or three years should become a lush jungle.
